Before we get started, read this ... please.
For your own safety and the safety of others
Please do the smart thing, for your own safety and the safety of others, take at
least
one modern fire starter every time you go into the outdoors. You never know when
you
will be injured, become ill or encounter an emergency situation. Friction fire
skills are great,
don’t get me wrong, they are the topic of this site after all. But don’t get so
cocky that
you think you can make a fire with anything, under any condition. I have failed
in making
friction fire on trips outdoors. And if you go out enough, sooner or later you
will fail too.
Now I can teach you the technique to do a bow drill one handed, so if you
injured
an arm or hand you could possibly still do friction fire. However, if you have a
lighter and
just one working thumb, you have flame. Flame makes fire. Fire can save your
life or the
lives of others. So every trip, every hike, every time you go into
the outdoors, take at least a
lighter or some matches in a water proof case. I recommend taking both a lighter
and
matches, and learning how to do the bow drill. These are the most practical
things you can do to make fire if you ever really need it.
Be careful out there,
Tim
